Quickly getting nowhere - VS 2017 v 15.2 Update failure

Can't update VS 2017 Community to version 15.2


I've gotten nowhere with installing this update. I've been looking at tons of stuff on the web (okay, I'm really not sure how much a webpage weighs) and trying it but to no avail. I have had VS 2017 installed since a day or two after it was released (I didn't have any of the release candidate versions installed).

When I started this update I lost my internet connection in the middle of the process and haven't been able to recover yet.


Unsuccessful Steps


In the last couple of hours today, here's what I've tried with no luck:

  1. Uninstall GIT ( https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/2812/install-of-git-holds-up-install-but-list-of-progra.html )
  2. Uninstall Microsoft visual Studio through Control Panel > Programs and Features. Uninstall Failed.
  3. Deleted contents of these folders 
    1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\*.*  (https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/10850/vs-2017-community-edition-update-failed-now-i-cann.html)
    2. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\VisualStudio
    3. C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\VisualStudioSecondaryInstaller
    4. C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\vsixinstaller
    5. C:\Users\XXXXAppData\Local\Xamarin
    6. C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\NuGet\v3-cache
    7. C:\Users\XXXX\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\15.0_cd3df3b0
  4. Clean registry w/ CCleaner
  5. Run installer (vs_community__124905511.1488131695.exe)
    1. Chose Web & Cloud > ASP.Net, Data storage
    2. Setup failed
  6. Followed instructions for collecting data (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=12493)
  7. Reported issue at: https://developercommunity.visualstudio.com/content/problem/56319/vs-2017-community-installation-failed.html
  8. Ran C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\Installer\resources\app\layout\installcleanup -f
  9. Clean registry w/ CCleaner

Note that for step 7 where I reported the issue, I had to do this by hi-jacking someone elses post because the only way you can report a VS 2017 error to the site is through VS 2017. I don't have VS 2017 running so how can you report an issue?

The only other way I found on MS's webs was to pay for reporting an issue. I have to pay to report an issue with their free software. I understand they don't want to pay for a tech to listen to me when I didn't pay a penny for the software but it looks like there's no way to report an error if you can't install the free software to complain about it.

Consequently, it looks like a down time as far as continuing on with my C# adventure...

Implementing IDisposable Properly

The Confusion of IDisposable Maybe it's just me but I have a hard time figuring out the best way to implement IDisposable, let alone when to use the interface. I understand the basics, that you use IDisposable to manage releasing managed and unmanaged resources. But why do you need to use it? I have been looking online for information about IDisposable and there is a lot available, both from Microsoft as well as others. I have to say, though, that I spent some time this morning going through what I find to be the best information source I've seen: Pluralsight's  IDisposable Best Practices for C# Developers by Elton Stoneman You do have to have a Pluralsight account in order to watch this course but it was worth it to me. Driver Training - cleaning up unused USB drivers

The following tale pertains to my Microsoft Windows 7 PC. I'm sure it's pretty much the same for a Windows 7 laptop. I don't know if any of this applies to Windows 8 or higher.
